Winter is here... Winter has arrived and Jack Frost has certainly visited most parts. It seems that many more are winter milking these days, being out in that cold is very brave indeed. Many others have moved to new jobs for the season ahead, so best of luck to all of you who have new goals and ambitions for the season ahead. Market Report With the Mystery Creek Fieldays just around the corner (literally!), we are gearing up for some long days and hope to see those of you that will be there. As always, J&S are approaching Fieldays, not as a sales pitch, but as an opportunity to engage with our valued customers and potential customers. We want to showcase our diverse range of products, plus any new gems we’re working on. We’re eager to have conversations around feeding cows with products that offer great value for money and compete well with what others are doing in the market. We believe that Fieldays is not all about the PK price, which is historically what many seem to have focused on. By all means, if the price of PK drops below 0 as a benchmark, it is difficult to argue with the idea of locking some in. We do believe that September/October can be a good time for sharp PK pricing as production starts up and there is normally lots of good pasture around. This, coupled with low demand, should put pressure on overseas suppliers to drop prices accordingly. Where proteins are concerned, Soya Meal prices are looking good at the moment, which goes against the proteins from Australia where the Canola and Cotton Seed Meal prices are high due to local demand… in the short term anyway. Harvest in Australia is towards the end of the year, but demand in Australia will determine what prices will do, so watch this space. Grain prices are still high and not looking to come back any time soon. Tapioca remains very competitive and at current prices looks hard to beat where value for money is concerned. J&S have been working on alternatives in the way of products with high levels of energy in the form of processed products with high starch and/or high sugar levels. Please contact your local sales representative for more information. PK Infusion - a re-introduction PK Infusion is back and looking to be a great option to extend or replace maize silage. PK Infusion has extra starch and sugars added to boost the energy, which will compliment pasture and due to the high digestibility of these processed products, the response from the cows will be seen in the vat and on your dockets. For best results, we recommend starting to feed properly at least two weeks before calving to give them the extra energy and right through until after mating. The results will speak for themselves. James and Son have options for all feed systems and we strive to create a great customer experience every time! Our loyal customers will vouch for that and we would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their continued support. 2017/18 promises to be a good season for New Zealand dairy farmers and the industry in general is looking positive after a couple of very difficult seasons.
